Beirut shaken by deadly blast, 78 dead, thousands injured

A massive explosion rocked the Lebanese capital of Beirut, killing at least 78 people and injuring over 4,000, August 4, 2020. /VCG

A huge explosion happened in the port area, with more than 2,700 tonnes of explosive materials reportedly stored unsafely for years, in Beirut, Lebanon, August 4, 2020 /VCG

Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab said the cause of the explosion was 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse in Beirut's port area for six years. /VCG

Thousands of people sought treatment in nearby hospitals, which were struggling to cope with the huge number of casualties. /AFP

President Michel Aoun declared three days of mourning and called for a two-week state of emergency. /VCG

World leaders offered support and condolences to the country, including Gulf nations in the region. /VCG
