Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday sent congratulations to Alexander Lukashenko on behalf of China on the latter's reelection as president of Belarus.

President Xi said China has attached great importance to China-Belarus ties and will continue to work with Lukashenko to promote the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, so as to bring benefits to both countries and peoples.

Noting that Belarus is China's comprehensive strategic partner and "iron friend", Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian at Monday's daily press conference said that China has always respected the choice of the Belarusian people.

"We believe that under the leadership of President Lukashenko, Belarus will make new progress in various undertakings," said Zhao.

He added that China has attached great importance to the development of China-Belarus relations and is willing to work with Belarus to continuously deepen bilateral relations and cooperation in various fields.

According to the Central Election Commission, Lukashenko won his sixth term with 80.23 percent of the votes in Sunday's presidential elections.
