Most popular Chinese dictionary launches new edition

Xinhua Dictionary, the most popular Chinese dictionary launched its 12th edition on Monday. /CFP

The new edition has come with a mobile application for the first time. By scanning a QR code on each page of the dictionary with the app, readers will have access to pronunciation and ways of writing Chinese characters. /CFP

Over 100 new words have been added to the new dictionary, many of which are related to the internet in their origins, such as "er wei ma" (QR code), "dian zan" (click the "like" button) and "jie ping" (screenshot). /CFP

Since its first edition in 1953, the dictionary published by China's Commercial Press sold more than 600 million copies globally. It was recognized by the Guinness World Records in 2016 as the "most popular dictionary" and the "best-selling regularly updated book." /CFP
