"Palaces of the Immortals," a work removed from Zhang Daqian's usual style, is the STAR of China Guardian's upcoming season.

Zhang painted it during his time in Brazil, with his family holding onto it thereafter.

It's the first time the public will get to see the painting.

As one of the best-known and most prodigious Chinese artists of the 20th century, Zhang's works are very popular among collectors.

Guo Tong, vice president of the auction house says six of them will be auctioned, and they're all highly coveted.

"'Palaces of Immortals' was a crucial work in his lifetime, a masterpiece during his transitional period," Guo said. "And the five other works to be auctioned are also incredibly fabulous, being kept in such fine condition. These paintings were created after he spent three years in Dunhuang, a stage from which he was fully inspired."

Dai Wei, general manager of the calligraphy and painting department said the painting is so special that it is difficult to estimate a value.

Dai Wei said: "No one knows what kind of a price it will reach. It is such a unique masterpiece, the market never had anything like it. It is difficult to define. Zhang Daqian was reproducing the Shanshui Painting from the Tang Dynasty. We haven't had a chance to see a real painting from that time. From his imagination, and his study and inspiration from Dunhuang, Zhang Daqian created this great painting."

Spring is Coming, a work by Chinese Modern and Contemporary painter Zhou Chunya, is another highly-anticipated item to be auctioned. Guo Tong mentioned: "When the work came out, all of us were astonished. This is a work that was never known, privately collected by Chunya's foreign friend from Luxembourg, he kept it at home for 35 years. This work is considered to be one of his four important early paintings, and the other three are with galleries or private collectors."

A highlight of this season's auction is 24 pieces of carpets from the Qing Dynasty. Chinese hand-made carpets have a history of two thousand years, dating back to the Han Dynasty.

With delicate handmade techniques, these carpets are still in very good condition.

They involved a dragon-phoenix element, the Chinese character "shou," and a flower and bird, which symbolizes good fortune and gives a touch of ancient beauty.

Ranging from painting and calligraphy to porcelain, furniture, wine and contemporary art, the Spring Auction is presenting a feast for collection lovers.
