Many parks and all the scenic spots in mountainous areas in Beijing closed on Wednesday ahead of what is believed to be the heaviest rainfall this summer.

Beijing authorities announced on Tuesday night that the capital will temporarily close some popular travel destinations, including the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven, the Beijing Zoo and the Beijing Botanical Garden, in consideration of visitors' safety. Those who have booked tickets online can apply for refunds.

In mountainous areas, scenic spots, such as the Great Wall at Badaling, have been temporarily shut down and homestay hotels and tourism villages have suspended receiving visitors, who are being sent travel warnings.

The weather forecast shows that there will be a strong rainfall in the north China region of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province with thunder, lightning and bursts of strong wind. The daily rainfall may reach 200mm in some parts.

There is also a high risk of mudslides and landslides in Beijing's mountainous areas in the next 48 hours. The Beijing Meteorological Service issued yellow warnings for rainstorms and geological disasters on Tuesday.

Residents have been advised to consider a flexible work schedule, work at home, and avoid going out.
