AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc will start its first phase of reopening movie theaters in the U.S. from August 20, covering more than 100 venues or about a sixth of its nationwide locations, the company said on Thursday.

The world's largest movie theater chain has reopened theaters in numerous international countries but they have remained shuttered in the U.S. since March. The chain touted the reopening as "Movies in 2020 at 1920 Prices" with retro ticket prices of 15 cents per movie for a day.

After several false starts due to a summer rise in coronavirus cases throughout much of the U.S., widespread moviegoing is now set to resume in late August. Regal Cinemas, the nation's second largest chain, is to reopen some U.S. locations on August 21.

During its opening-day promotion, AMC will show catalog films, including "Ghostbusters," "Black Panther," and "Back to the Future." Those older films will continue to play afterward for five U.S. dollars.

AMC plans to open about two-thirds of its more than 600 theaters in the U.S. in time for the much-anticipated Christopher Nolan film "Tenet," which is slated for a September 3 release. Several states, including California and New York, have yet to allow movie theaters to reopen.

AMC and other chains have said they will operate at reduced capacity to facilitate social distancing, along with increased theater cleaning and required mask wearing, to limit the spread of COVID-19.
