Global COVID-19 cases surpass 22 mln: Johns Hopkins University
Global COVID-19 cases topped 22 million on Tuesday, with over 777,000 fatalities and more than 13.9 million recoveries, according to data released by Johns Hopkins University.
Brazil registered 1,352 deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 109,888, the Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday. Meanwhile, 47,784 new cases were reported in the same period, bringing the total number of infections to 3,407,354.
Israel's Ministry of Health on Tuesday reported 1,658 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total infections in the country to 96,409. The death toll climbed to 708 with the addition of 16 new deaths, the second-highest daily rise since the epidemic outbreak in Israel in late February.
Saudi Arabia reported 1,409 new coronavirus cases, raising the tally of infections in the kingdom to 301,323. The total recoveries rose to 272,911 with the addition of 4,526 recoveries, while the death toll surged to 3,470 with 34 new fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours.
Chile on Tuesday reported 1,336 new cases and 33 more deaths, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 388,855 and the death toll to 10,546. Given a drop in new cases, the government has begun to gradually lift restrictions in the country in an attempt to reactivate the economy, though areas with a high level of new cases remain under quarantine.
Greek authorities on Tuesday announced 269 confirmed cases and two more deaths in a 24-hour span, the highest number of cases recorded within 24 hours since the first infection was registered in the country in late February. A total of 7,472 cases have been diagnosed in the country, including 232 fatalities.
