At least eight people were killed and six are missing after Thursday's collision between an oil tanker and a cargo ship about 1.5 nautical miles southeast of the Yangtze River estuary, maritime authorities in Shanghai said on Saturday. Three people have been rescued so far.

The accident between the tanker carrying about 3,000 tonnes of gasoline and the freighter loaded with sand and gravel occurred at 3:39 a.m. local time, causing a fire on the deck of the tanker and the cargo ship to sink.

An investigation is underway.
