Hong Kong affairs are purely China's "internal affairs" and Hong Kong's economic and financial activities are under the jurisdiction of the Special Administrative Region government, a spokesperson for the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission said in a recent interview, adding no foreign government has the right to intervene.

The spokesperson made the remarks in a response to Washington's move to sanction 11 Chinese central government and the HKSAR government officials.

The United States has grossly interfered in China's internal affairs and seriously violated international law and basic norms of international relations, the spokesperson said.

"We always believe that cooperation and consultation are the only right way to resolve China-U.S. economic, trade and financial issues," the spokesperson added, urging the U.S. side not to go its own way.

"We firmly support Chinese-funded financial institutions to do business in compliance with laws and regulations, and provide good financial services to all customers, including Hong Kong residents and enterprises," the spokesperson told reporters.

When asked if the sanctions will impact related financial services, the spokesperson said the overall operation of Hong Kong's financial market and its linked exchange rate system is stable at present, reflecting the confidence of the international market in Hong Kong.

"We firmly believe that Hong Kong's status as an international financial center will not be weakened," the spokesperson said, adding that the region will become more prosperous and stable in the future.
