A couple vandalized a rock at Bolang Valley, famous for its Danxia landform, in Yulin City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, CCTV reported Sunday.

The couple wrote their names on the red sandstone, drew a heart in the middle and left the date they visited at the end, August 21.

The management of the scenic area and the police have started an investigation.

The incident has drawn the ire of many netizens.

"There are so many places where this couple could have chosen to express their love, not here," a netizen wrote.

"This destruction of nature is not civilized," said another netizen.

Bolang Valley has not been fully developed as a scenic spot and its main section is protected by barbed wire.
