India's COVID-19 cases surge to 3.1 million

India on Monday reported 61,408 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, according to the union health ministry, pushing its total tally to over 3.1 million.

The country crossed the grim three-million-case milestone on Sunday, 17 days after it hit two million infections.

A total of 836 more people died from COVID-19 in the 24-hour period, raising India's death toll to 57,542.
