At least 17 dead dolphins washed up on the coast of Mauritius, where a Japanese ship spilled more than 1,000 tonnes of oil. Environmental consultants said some dolphins were stranded on the shore and appeared seriously ill. The Japanese bulk carrier MV Wakashio ran aground on a coral reef near the eastern coast of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean on July 25. Pounded by the surf for days, the ship's hull cracked and began leaking oil, fouling a protected wetlands area, mangroves and a small island that was a bird and wildlife sanctuary. Besides, many fish and crabs have been found dead.
