Elephants can live up to 70 years in the wild. The truth, however, is that few can make it. The loss of teeth is the leading cause of death among mature elephants. After an elephant's last set of teeth wear down, they lose the ability to chew and digest. Therefore, many elephants die of starvation or malnutrition.
