Latest COVID-19 development in the U.S.:
- Total infections surpassed 5.9 million nationwide: More than 5.9 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus in the United States and nearly 182,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University tally.
- Four people tested positive for COVID-19 at RNC: Four people at the Republican National Convention in North Carolina this week tested positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said on Friday. The party's convention, which began with one day of events in Charlotte, North Carolina, ended on Thursday.
- Pentagon staffer on Esper's travel team tested positive: A member of Defense Secretary Mark Esper's team traveling in the Indo-Pacific region who helped handle his trip arrangements has tested positive for COVID-19. The person was among the advance team and has not come into close contact with Esper, according to a CNN report.
- At least 33 states reject Trump administration's new COVID-19 testing guidance: A majority of U.S. states have rejected new Trump administration COVID-19 testing guidance, according to officials at state health agencies and public statements reviewed by Reuters. At least 33 states including Texas and Arizona continue to recommend testing people who have been exposed to COVID-19 and have no symptoms, spurning guidance published by the U.S. CDC this week that said testing may be unnecessary.
- Pelosi says White House $1.3 trillion coronavirus relief offer not enough: U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Friday a White House proposal to spend 1.3 trillion U.S. dollars in new coronavirus economic relief would not be enough to meet the needs of American workers and families and she hoped Republicans would come to the negotiating table and accept the Democratic offer of 2.2 trillion U.S. dollars in spending.
