2022 Winter Olympics facilities construction underway

The construction of stadiums and the ski track for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing is underway. The installation and overall testing of the facilities in ski venues are also underway, ahead of test events to be held later this year. In Sanhe City near Beijing, the ropeway system for the ski site is being manufactured.

"We have planned everything from the safe side. This means we have two power supplies for each ropeway. That means if there is a shutdown, we can still switch to the other supply, and this continues to the frequency converter, also to the engine. If one engine has a problem, we can switch to the other within half an hour,"said Christian Whilhelm, head of project management and engineering for Doppelmayr, a leading manufacturer of ropeways, cable cars and ski lifts.

China is building a green Winter Olympics. Engineers from across the world are contributing to building a highly automatic and energy-efficient snowmaking system.

"We have very specially shaped turbines, which can save a lot of energy. We design the slopes. Making snow consumes a lot of water, but then the water is transported to the water reservoir, so that is can be reused. We don't lose all the water that is being sprayed out," said Florian Hajzeri from snowmaking equipment provider TechnoAlpin.

With the 2022 Winter Olympics two years away, the momentum is also building. Companies that have foreseen the potential of the Chinese market are reaping the benefits. Winning the Winter Olympics bid has also given a massive boost to the country's winter sports industry.

"Since China won the bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics, the domestic ski industry has made great progress. The demand for products has grown a lot, and we have seen this opportunity to introduce a new D-Line system, which will also be on display at the upcoming World Winter Sport (Beijing) Expo," said Li Yangqiu, general manager of Sanhe Doppelmayr transport systems.

It estimated that in 2022, the value of China's winter sports industry will reach eight trillion yuan (around 1.01 trillion U.S. dollars).
