As many as 29 people were given penalty tickets for breaching the two-person gathering limit imposed amid the coronavirus pandemic, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) police said in a statement on Sunday.

Dozens of people gathered and chanted slogans in two shopping malls in Mong Kok on Sunday, which may constitute the offence of "participating in an unauthorized assembly" under the Public Order Ordinance and relevant offences under the Prevention and Control of Disease (Prohibition on Group Gathering) Regulation. Some protesters even chanted the slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times," which may be tantamount to breaching the national security law.

"For the sake of public health and public safety, police call upon everyone to refrain from taking part in prohibited group gatherings and unauthorized assemblies," the statement said, adding the police do not condone any illegal acts and will take resolute enforcement actions, including the issuing of summons and making arrests.
