Live updates: Global COVID-19 cases surpass 27 million

There are over 27 million confirmed COVID-19 cases globally, with over 880,000 fatalities and more than 18 million recoveries, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University. 

Here is what we know:

As of Saturday, the Chinese mainland recorded 85,134 cases, with 329 asymptomatic patients under medical observation. The death toll in China stands at 4,737, including 96 fatalities from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and seven from the Taiwan region.

The Chinese mainland recorded 12 new cases on Sunday, all from overseas. It is the 22nd consecutive day the Chinese mainland has reported no new domestically transmitted cases.

Australia's coronavirus hot spot state of Victoria on Sunday extended a strict lockdown in its capital Melbourne until September 28, despite a drop in number of cases.

The U.S. has registered more than 6.2 million infections and more than 188,000 deaths so far – both the highest in the world. And a key model projected the nation's COVID-19 deaths to double to 410,000 by January
