The ancient city of Qamdo, which means "juncture of rivers" in the Tibetan language, has long been regarded as the eastern gate of China's Tibet Autonomous Region. It is located in the Hengduan Mountains and the basin of the rivers of Jinsha, Lancang and Nujiang.
