Latest COVID-19 development around the world

Brazil's death toll has surpassed 121,000 after 553 people died in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of fatalities to 121,381. Tests detected 45,961 new cases of infection, pushing the total caseload to 3,908,272. The country's Independence Day parade has been cancelled this year due to the pandemic.

South Korea reported 235 new cases, including 222 locally transmitted, bringing total number of confirmed cases to 20,182. There has been a sharp increase in severe cases, with 104 so far.

The U.S.'s total number of confirmed cases surpassed 6 million on Monday, with the national death toll exceeding 183,400, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Colleges and universities across the country have seen increasing outbreaks as students are returning to campus, forcing some to switch in-person instruction to online courses.

The UK confirmed 1,406 new cases with two more deaths on Monday, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 335,873 and death toll to 41,501.

Argentina reported 9,309 new cases and 203 new deaths, bringing the total confirmed cases to 417,735, with 8660 deaths. The government has issued a decree extending the country's quarantine until September 20.
