Lebugou: Beautiful and mysterious Tibetan border villages

Updated 2020.09.03 22:10 GMT+8

On the southern slopes of the Himalayas in Lebugou, Cona County, Shannan City, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, there lie a number of villages primarily inhabited by Mongpa people.

The elevation of this border region is drastically lower than most part of the Tibetan Plateau, making it one of the most rainy and humid places in Tibet.

Due to a lack of infrastructure, Lebugou used to be isolated from the outside world. However, in recent years, the local government has been promoting tourism in the region by building more homestay hotels and restaurants, and repopulating the area with residents from other areas.

This region is close to the borderline with Bhutan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India. Many locals take the responsibilities of patrolling the border by herding livestock.

The ethnic traditions of Mongpa people are also well-preserved in the border villages.

Apart from tourism, one of the major sources of income for local villagers is tea plantation.
