The recent visit of Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Europe was a round of "strategic communication" between China and European countries amid rising global uncertainty, China's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

During the visit, the five European nations - Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, France and Germany - expressed their hope to resume cooperation and strengthen communication with China and jointly cope with global challenges, Hua Chunying, spokesperson for the ministry, said at a regular press conference.

Addressing concerns over rising unilateralism and world economic downturn, the Chinese foreign minister and leaders and foreign ministers of the five European countries reached three important consensuses after discussions on bilateral relations and the international situation, Hua said.

One of the most important consensuses reached is to uphold multilateralism, she said, adding that the five European nations have agreed that China and Europe should take joint actions to promote multilateralism.

Hua said that the China-Europe relations have not only brought benefits to citizens on both sides but also made contributions to the world development, and China is willing to continue to work with Europe to step up bilateral ties as well as safeguard multilateralism and free trade.
