The South China Sea has been another flashpoint in worsening relations between China and the United States. Washington has alleged that China treats the South China Sea as its "maritime empire."

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian refuted such accusations at a news briefing in July, stressing that China always treats countries surrounding the South China Sea as equals and always maintains the utmost restraint in safeguarding the sovereignty, rights, and interests of the South China Sea.
