Ai Qing, regarded as one of the finest modern Chinese poets, was thrilled about the dramatic transformation of Karamay, a city which once a barren region had become a modern oil city. Ai wrote a poem about the city in the 1980s, describing it as "the most silent solider with the most powerful heart."
