Team Jumbo rider Primoz Roglic clinched the yellow jersey from Britain's Adam Yates after Sunday's 2020 Tour de France stage 9, while Roglic's Slovenian compatriot rookie Tadej Pogacar won the stage.

"It was an amazing day, I gave everything in the last climb but I could not drop my rivals. But the stage win makes up for it," said Pogacar, who finished third overall in his grand tour debut on the Vuelta last year.

The 21-year-old Pogacar had a message of consolation for his 30-year-old countryman Roglic.

"He's won before and he'll win again. He and I can achieve great things for Slovenia," Pogacar said.

Defending champion Egan Bernal finished in the five-man leading group and sits in second place overall, 21 seconds behind Roglic.

Yates meanwhile ended the stage in 15th place, 54 seconds off the pace, and dropped down to eighth overall.

The race heads into its first rest day on Monday, when all the riders will be submitted to a coronavirus test, and teams with two positive cases will be banned.
