The way media professionals work has changed dramatically with the development of technology.

At the China International Fair for Trade in Services, emerging broadcasting technologies like 5G, 4K/8K and AI are featured at China Media Group (CMG)'s exhibition stand.

Two special backpacks were demonstrated at CMG's booth.

"The purpose of these backpacks is to shrink the large equipment we used before while making it more portable and lightweight," Sun Hao, engineer of CMG's Technology Bureau, told CGTN.

"In this case, an individual reporter can transmit the images back at any time and any place with the backpack," he said, noting that its functionality depends on the availability of a 5G network.

The backpacks were used during the 70th founding anniversary celebration of the People's Republic of China (PRC) last year.

"We had four cameramen on moving floats. They could transmit the images back with this backpack and a small 4K camera."

5G+VR production system

A green screen studio with model of astronaut attracted audiences' attention.

Wang Bo, engineer of CMG's Technology Bureau, said it is a virtual interactive intelligent system driven by 5G and VR.

"Imagine we are in a place with beautiful scenery, but the host can't be at the scene to do a live broadcast due to weather or other conditions," Wang said.

"In this scenario, we can set up a 360-degree VR camera at the scene and transmit the view back to the studio with a 5G network."

A "live broadcast" can be done using a composite of the view and the host.

Two of the most classic Chinese TV series "Journey to the West" and "Dream of the Red Chamber" were showing on screens at CMG's exhibition stand. The two TV series were tape recorded in 1980s in standard definition.

"The footage was full of noisy points and scratches, and the images were not very clear because of the limitations of standard definition," Wang told CGTN.

With the help of the AI enhancing technology, the two classics can reach the clarity of 4K.

"And the noisy points and scratches caused by tape recording were eliminated through an AI algorithm," Wang said.

AI cloud editing

During the 70th founding anniversary celebration of the People's Republic of China, CMG managed to edit and synthesize 86 clips of the parade through AI cloud editing technology, thus greatly improving production efficiency.

"These videos were released about 90 seconds after the formation appeared on TV," said Qi Zhichao, engineer of CMG's Technology Bureau.

"The videos were different from those aired on TV, so audiences could have a more comprehensive view of the parade," he said.

With these emerging technologies, audiences can experience media content faster, with better clarity and more creativity.
