In Asia, some countries have published their daily numbers of infections and deaths over the past few hours.

The Philippines on Wednesday recorded 3,550 additional novel coronavirus infections and 69 more deaths. The total confirmed cases in the country had risen to 272,934, the most in Southeast Asia, while confirmed deaths have reached 4,732.

Indonesia on Wednesday reported its biggest daily rise of infections with 3,963 new cases. The country has now recorded a total of 228,993 infections. A total of 135 new COVID-19 related deaths were also found in the same period, taking the total to 9,100, the biggest death toll in Southeast Asia.

Bangladesh reported 1,615 new COVID-19 cases and 21 new deaths on Wednesday, making the tally at 342,671 and death toll at 4,823.

Malaysia reported 62 new infections on Wednesday, bringing the national total to 10,031.

And here're some other developments from some European countries.

The Czech Republic hit a new daily record of infections with 1,677 cases on Tuesday. The overall number of confirmed cases rose to 38,896 as of the end of September 15 in the country of 10.7 million.

The Madrid region, one of the worst-hit in Spain, will introduce targeted lockdowns and other restrictions on movement on Friday in areas with high COVID-19 cases, local authorities said.

Russia reported 5,670 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, pushing its national tally to 1,079,519, the fourth largest in the world. Meanwhile, 132 people had died in the last 24 hours, bringing the official death toll to 18,917.

As Moscow speeds up plans to distribute its COVID-19 vaccine abroad, Russia's sovereign wealth fund said it has agreed to supply 100 million doses of Sputnik-V to Indian drug company Dr. Reddy's Laboratories.

Rhondda Cynon Taf, a Welsh county in the UK, will be put under local lockdown measures following two key clusters of cases at a rugby club and a pub. New restrictions will come into effect on Thursday afternoon at six. People will not be allowed to enter or leave the area "without a reasonable excuse." Restaurants, pubs, cafes, and all other hospitality premises will close at 11 p.m., according to Sky News.
