Whether it's in the shed, the farmland or on the mountains, this man dances wherever he goes.

And he especially likes the peacock dance, which is a traditional folk dance of the Dai ethnic minority in China. To the Dai people, the peacock is "holy bird," and a symbol of happiness and auspiciousness. There are approximately 1.2 million Dai people living in southwest China's Yunnan Province, so the peacock dance is very popular there.

The man in the video is not a professional dancer, but an ordinary farmer. His name is Ma Jin. He lives in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan province and is from the Yi ethnic minority group.

He twists his body, waves his arms and turns in circles with the music. He is simply dressed, even a little muddy. While he may not have a dancer's physique, it does not affect his movements, and he always has on a smile.

Recently, videos of him dancing went viral on Chinese social media platforms, raking in some 10 million likes on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok. Many netizens were buoyed by his optimistic spirit, and one called him "a talented dancer who was delayed by farming."

Ma has enjoyed dancing since he was a child. But due to financial constraints at home, he did not receive professional training. His dance moves are mostly improvised, and is mainly an outlet to take a break from farming.

"My daughter downloads the songs I like on my phone. When I weed the cornfield, I would listen to music and dance for a while during the break, as a kind of relaxation," said Ma.

In his spare time, Ma teaches the elderly in the village how to dance. "We dance to our ethnic minority dances, which is different from the dances that people dance in the city."

There are many parts of Ma's dance that display his talent, such as backbends and splits. He said that he does not have time to practice. "It's just that when I'm tired from work, I will stretch my legs and twist my waist by the paddy-field ridges."

He started uploading videos online in May this year with the help of his friend. With his new found fame, Ma said he wants to learn more dance moves from TV shows and share more videos online to bring happiness to others.

Under the influence of Ma, his two children also like to dance very much. Ma said he hopes he can earn more money and send his children to a professional dance school to learn dance and realize his unfulfilled dream.
