The global image of the U.S. and its president, Donald Trump, has deteriorated sharply over the administration's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, showing a further plummet in its already poor performance, a global survey finds.

The poll, conducted by the Pew Research Center between June 10 and August 3, shows a drastic drop in confidence in the U.S. and its president across the 13 advanced economies where more than 13,000 adults were polled, with ratings for the U.S. in some of its ally countries reaching record lows and the proportion of people expressing confidence in Trump plummeting to dim digits.

All but one of the 13 countries had a majority of those polled disapproving the U.S., while more than half of them found less than 35 percent saying otherwise.

Only nine percent of those polled in Belgium were found to have favorable views of Trump, and 10 percent in Germany and Denmark. No more than a quarter of the respondents in the 13 countries were confident in the U.S. president, the survey found.

Trump is the least trusted major world leader, according to the survey. With a median of only 16 percent of all those polled around the globe feeling confident that Trump would "do the right thing in world affairs," his approval rating falls far behind other world leaders: France's Emmanuel Macron with 64 percent, Britain's Boris Johnson with 48 percent and Germany's Angela Merkel with 76 percent.

The global popularity of the U.S. has plunged considerably since Trump took office in January 2017, but ever since the global pandemic hit the country, the rate of the plunge has intensified.

The respondents in all 13 countries agree that the U.S. has had the worst response to the novel coronavirus. A median of 15 percent across the nations polled think the Trump administration had done a good job. In Spain, where the U.S.' coronavirus response received the highest score, only one-fifth of those surveyed gave a thumbs up. The poll also found that other countries received far higher ratings than the U.S. for their response.
