Downy grapes are "black pearls" grown from the rocks, according to people from Luocheng Mulao Autonomous County, an impoverished county in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. They help improve environmental quality and help locals increase their income. Since 2012, the downy grape industry has lifted over 1,200 households out of poverty in the county.
