Two people died and around 14 others were wounded after a shooting at a backyard party in the early hours of Saturday morning in Rochester, in the northern part of the U.S. state of New York, the Rochester Police Department said on Saturday.

A man and a woman between the ages of 18 and 22 died in the shooting, said Interim Police Chief Mark Simmons, adding that the wounded have been taken to two different hospitals with no life-threatening injuries reported.

The shooting appeared to start at a backyard party just before 12:30 a.m., with about 100 people running to and from a "very chaotic scene," said Simmons.

He said it was unclear if the shooting was targeted or random act of violence. So far, no arrests have been made.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren issued a statement on the shooting, asking for prayers and support for the victims and their families. Police investigating the incident and looking for those responsible have asked people to remain calm and exercise restraint.

A total of 30,449 people have been killed in gun violence in the United States this year as of Saturday, according to the Gun Violence Archives.
