Tottenham had, at long last, secured their final piece of the jigsaw.

It's been seven years since Real Madrid broke the world transfer record to lure Gareth Bale away from his beloved Spurs. Now, the former golden boy finally returned. Jose Mourinho's side have completed the signing of Bale on a season-long deal and handed him the No.9 shirt.

"It's nice to be back. It's such a special club to me. It's where I made my name," beamed the 31-year-old superstar. "Hopefully, now I can get some match fitness, get under way and really help the team and, hopefully, win trophies."

However, fans will have to wait at least a month for the debut of the 31-years-old's second coming after his medical check confirmed a knee injury sustained playing for Wales earlier this month.

"I always thought when I did leave that I would love to come back. I feel like it is a good fit. It's a good time for me. I'm hungry and motivated," said Bale, who won four Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, three UEFA Super Cups and three Club World Cups with Real.

"I think by going to Madrid, winning trophies and going far with the national team I feel like I have that kind of winning mentality, how to win trophies," he added. "You don't realize it until you're there and in those situations, in finals, how to kind of deal with the situation, the nerves, the pressure, and I think that all goes with experience."

"Hopefully I can bring that to the dressing room, bring a bit more belief to everybody that we can win a trophy, and the target is to do that this season, to be fighting on every front possible. I want to bring that mentality here, back to Tottenham," he observed.

Bale still remains the most expensive British player in history, but he has struggled for game time in recent seasons due to injuries and a broken relationship with Real coach Zinedine Zidane. "Our club wishes good luck to a player who has been part of one of the most successful stages of our history," Madrid said in a terse statement after his departure was sealed.

According to multiple British media outlets, Spurs will cover only a part of Bale's huge salary, while ESPN revealed the deal does not include an option or obligation to buy Bale next summer.

Meanwhile, Tottenham also confirmed the capture of Sergio Reguilon from Madrid, beating competition from Manchester United for the defender's signature. The 23-year-old has signed a contract until 2025 but with a reported buy-back clause.

Reguilon was on loan at Sevilla last season and helped them win the Europa League as well as finish fourth in La Liga. He will wear the No.3 shirt for Tottenham, who play at Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday.

The 23-year-old told Tottenham's official website that Bale has been "an idol" for him since he watched the Welsh striker's incredible display against Inter Milan in the Champions League in 2010.

"Since that game I started to follow him, to watch YouTube videos of him and I became a big fan. I bought his shirts, his books – everything about him," Reguilon said. "And now being able to be here with him, in the club that raised him… I showed him on the plane the tweets that I wrote to him, and the pictures that I have from him, and he enjoyed that."

Earlier in the day, Premier League defending champions Liverpool also made inroads into reinforcing their squad as they signed Portugal forward Diogo Jota from Wolves.

"It's just a really exciting moment for me and my family," said the 23-year-old. "When you look at the Premier League, you always see Liverpool as one of the biggest teams in the country, so it's impossible to say no."

"All of my path since I was a kid and now, to join a club like Liverpool – the world champions – is just unbelievable. I just want to get started," he continued. "They are world-class players. Every match, they try to win. They score a lot of goals and they work together. I want to be one more piece to join that (front) three."

"We did the deal because it is good for everyone," said Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo. "Diogo was happy here but players like new challenges. I think Diogo is going to the right place and we wish him all the best, knowing that it will never be forgotten, especially by our fans, all the memorable moments that Diogo provided."

Jota's move follows Liverpool's signing of Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich on Friday.
