India's confirmed COVID-19 cases rise to 5.48 million 

India on Monday reported 86,961 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, bringing its nationwide cases tally to more than 5.48 million, according to local health authorities.  

The country also recorded 1,130 new fatalities due to COVID-19, pushing its death toll to 87,882. 

As of now, India has the second highest number of infections worldwide, behind the United States, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.
