"The pandemic enlightens us: reform and improvement of the global governance system is urgently required. It is not only a test to each nation's governing capacity, but also an inspection of the global governance system," Chinese President Xi Jinping said via video link at the General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
"We should stick to the path of multilateralism, and uphold the international system with the UN at its core," he added.
"Global governance should follow the principle of co-negotiation, sharing and co-construction, and push all nations to realize equal rights, equal opportunities and equal rules, so as to help the global governance system conform to the changed international political and economic landscape, meet the realistic demands needed to address global challenges, and comply with the historical trend of peace, cooperation and mutual benefit," Xi continued.
The Chinese president also said that differences of opinion between countries are normal, and these should be solved properly through dialogue and consultation. There can be competition between countries, he said, but it must be positive and benign.
"We should keep the moral bottom line and international norms. A great nation should look like a great nation, providing more public goods and taking more responsibilities as a great power," he added.
