The COVID-19 pandemic illustrates that economic globalization is an objective reality and irreversible historical trend, Chinese President Xi Jinping told the UN General Debate on Tuesday, before warning that "burying heads in the sand like an ostrich to ignore it, or waving a spear like Don Quixote to resist, goes against the laws of history."
Xi made the remarks in a speech at the General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly via video link.
"The world will not be isolated again, let alone be divided artificially. We must take to the challenges brought about by economic globalization and face up to major issues such as the wealth gap and the development gap," Xi said.
"We must properly handle the relationship between the government and the market, fairness and efficiency, growth and distribution, technology and employment, so that development can be both balanced and sufficient, to the benefit of varying groups falling under different classes in worldwide countries."
The Chinese president called on countries to adhere to openness and inclusiveness and never give up the pursuit of an open world economy.
"To achieve this, we should safeguard the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization as the cornerstone, take a clear stand against unilateralism and protectionism, and keep the global industrial chain and supply chain stable and smooth."
