Chinese fashion designer Grace Chen has released her latest couture collection "Unity," inspired by the Mogao Grottoes in China's Gansu Province, at Beijing Fashion Week.

Chen says she was inspired by both the patterns of the murals and the spirit of Dunhuang.

"Dunhuang is always an inspiration for Chinese artists. It's a dream that we try to achieve. It's an old dream from ancient times. But I think we can actually apply it to our daily life. So this collection is a celebration of the spirit of Dunhuang...not only just the patterns and colors, but the avant-garde spirit of Dunhuang and Tang Dynasty," said Chen.

The inspiration may come from thousands of years ago, but the designs of this collection are all modern.

"It's a very modern collection. If I don't tell you it's inspired by Dunhuang, probably you don't know that. But if I tell about that, you can see a lot of things from Dunhuang... in a very wearable way," she said.

Chen has been in the fashion industry for more than 20 years. The U.S.-educated designer said it's a responsibility for Chinese designers to keep their traditions alive.

And with this collection, she wants to take people back to the glamorous Tang Dynasty.

"Chinese people in the Tang Dynasty have such glamour and sophistication that we have not seen for a long time. I want to bring that back through fashion design," she explained.

Chen will later present this collection in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
