India's minister of state for railways dies of COVID-19

Suresh Angadi, India's Minister of State for Railways died due to COVID-19 on Wednesday, according to local media reports. 

The 65-year-old minister had tested positive for COVID-19 on September 11 and was later admitted to New Delhi's AIIMS trauma center. 

"Shri Suresh Angadi was an exceptional Karyakarta, who worked hard to make the Party strong in Karnataka. He was a dedicated MP and effective Minister, admired across the spectrum," said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter.

Modi also expressed his condolences to Angadi's family and friends.

India on Thursday reported 86,508 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, bringing its nationwide cases tally to more than 5.73 million, according to local health authorities.  

The country also recorded 1,129 new fatalities due to COVID-19, pushing its death toll to 91,149.
