Plastic waste is creating an ever-increasing threat to life on Earth. The United Nations says the world produces around 300 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. That's equivalent to the weight of the entire human population. Every year, up to 5 trillion single-use plastic bags are used worldwide. Researchers said more than eight billion tonnes of plastic have been produced in the past seven decades, only 9 percent of which has been recycled.
