To improve China-US relations, one fundamental aspect that cannot be neglected is understanding each others' culture. But this has proven difficult. While young Chinese have spent decades embracing American pop culture and many studying in the US, the US still finds the unique system of Chinese language and philosophy hard to understand. David Moser is a Sinologist and linguist who came to China in the 1980s with an enthusiasm to learn Chinese characters. Now with more than two decades of firsthand experiences in China, Mr. Moser said the lack of understanding of Chinese culture in the West is still a big challenge today.
