"Why are the pretty flowers so red?" or "Gulibita," as known to Chinese Tajiks, was once the theme song of a popular 1960s Chinese movie, enjoying nationwide popularity. But the song, dedicated to true love, has been in the musical repertoire of the county of Tashkurghan in southwestern Xinjiang for a long time.
