Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has commended the United Nations General Assembly for prioritizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as the world is facing pressing problems amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wang told President of the 75th Session of the UNGA Volkan Bozkir during a phone conversation on Sunday that fighting poverty is one of the priorities in the 2030 agenda and a shared concern of developing countries.

China hopes all countries will act to achieve the goal of sustainable development as the world marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN, he added.

Bozkir said one of the top priorities of the session of the UNGA is to take action to realize the 2030 agenda, to eliminate poverty and help developing countries. As the world faces more threats from COVID-19, it's important for all countries to take joint action and to recommit to multilateralism to address global problems, he added.

China is an advocate and important partner of multilateralism, Bozkir said, adding that he looks forward to strengthening cooperation with China in this regard.

Turning to the challenges arising from COVID-19, Wang said President Xi Jinping offered China's solutions to traditional and non-traditional threats during his speech at a high-level meeting to commemorate the UN's founding anniversary.

China calls on all UN members to commit to multilateralism and improve global governance in order to resolves these problems, the foreign minister said.

China supports the UN's leading role in addressing the pandemic, he noted, adding that all member states should strengthen communication and coordination and oppose politicizing and stigmatizing the virus.
