Just days after Genoa's goalkeeper Mattia Perin and midfielder Lasse Schone tested positive for COVID-19 and missed their team's 6-0 drubbing by Napoli over the weekend, the situation took a sharp turn for the worse.

The Italian Serie A side confirmed that another 12 members of the match squad contracted the deadly virus, taking the total number of cases at the club to 14.

"Genoa have activated all the procedures provided for by the coronavirus protocol and informed the relevant authorities. The club will give updates as the situation evolves," read a statement.

After hearing the news, league leaders Napoli announced that their players and staff will undergo a fresh round of coronavirus tests before their much-anticipated clash with defending champions Juventus on Sunday.

It still remains unclear whether Genoa's match against Torino on Saturday will be postponed.

Meanwhile in England, the Premier League said on Monday that 10 people tested positive for the coronavirus over the past week. This is the highest number of positive results since the tests started.

"Between Monday 21 September and Sunday 27 September, 1,595 players and Club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, there were 10 new positive tests," the league said on its official website. "Players or Club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days."

The Premier League didn't disclose details of the players who were positive, but West Ham earlier revealed that their manager, David Moyes, had contracted the virus along with players Issa Diop and Josh Cullen.

"At 6:20 p.m. we suddenly got some information from our doctor and head physio to say there were three positive tests, the manager and the two players," Moyes' assistant Alan Irvine told Sky Sports.

"We were shocked by the news, we've had so many tests and not had any positive. But we've been very particular about protocol right from the start, the medical team are very aware of what has been happening and we've followed all the protocol, and we'll be following protocol now," he added.
