As China battled the surge of COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year, two thirds of the 40,000 medical workers that went to help Hubei Province were women, said Chinese President Xi Jinping at the high-level meeting on the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women at the 75th UN General Assembly on Thursday.

Xi recalled a news report about a 20-year-old nurse from south China's Guangdong Province who, while responding to journalists noting how young she was, said "I am no longer a kid when I put on the PPE." Her words had deeply touched so many people, Xi said.

Thanks to the devotion of thousands of hard working and courageous Chinese women, China was able to bring the pandemic under control, Xi said.

As COVID-19 is still running rampant across numerous countries, women have been facing greater challenges.

During his speech, Xi called to pay particular attention to the special needs of women, implementing the 'Beijing Declaration' and a 'Platform for Action,' in fighting the pandemic.
