Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed on Thursday to donate $10 million to UN Women within five years, to accelerate the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.

The Chinese president's promise came while delivering a speech via video at the High-level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of Beijing Women's Conference.

He called for the protection of women's rights and improvement in their wellbeing through development, and by mobilizing their enthusiasm, initiative and creativity, to build up their sense of fulfillment, happiness and security, as well as to enable them to have and enjoy varied lives.

Xi also proposed more cooperation in realizing gender equality and empowering women around the globe.

"We are supportive of the UN in prioritizing women's work. China has increased investment in eliminating violence, discrimination and poverty, and has already made achievements in narrowing the gender digital gap, so as to realize the goals concerning women in the UN's 2030 agenda," he said.

The Chinese president noted that all the proposals in global cooperation that he launched five years ago at the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment have been realized.

He vowed that China will donate 10 million dollars to UN Women within the next five years, and will continue to support the China-UNESCO Prize for Girls' and Women's Education.

Xi also proposed holding another Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in 2025.
