Arsenal squeezed past Liverpool 5-4 on penalties to advance to the English Football League (EFL) Cup quarterfinals on Thursday after a goalless 90 minutes.

With the Premier League champions making several changes to the team that beat Arsenal in the league 3-1 on Monday and their opponents also rotating, it was always unlikely to be a high-class encounter.

Arsenal, however, celebrated in shootout when Joe Willock's spot kick crept under keeper Adrian to send them through.

Barca overcome early red card to earn big win at Celta

Impressive performances from Lionel Messi and Ansu Fati helped Barcelona overcome an early red card to defender Clement Lenglet and win 3-0 at Celta Vigo on Thursday to make it two wins out of two in the new La Liga season.

After Ansu Fati had opened the scoring, Messi helped double Barca’s advantage early in the second half with an unstoppable run down the right-hand side of the area and a shot that bounced off Celta’s Lucas Olaza and into the net for an own goal.

Messi later had a strike ruled out narrowly for offside and then created Barca’s third goal in added time, dancing through Celta’s defence and firing a shot at goal which keeper Ivan Villar parried, leaving Sergi Roberto to score on the rebound.

"Leo is so fired up right now," Barcelona defender Sergi Roberto said.

"He ran so much today and played out of his skin for the team."
