China's tennis ace Zhang Shuai made history by making Round of 16 at French Open after defeating Clara Burel 2-0 in women's singles competition on Saturday.

19-year-old Burel, though only ranked No. 357 in the world (Zhang was No. 39) and only came to Roland-Garros via wild card, she already knocked out Arantxa Rus and Kaja Juvan in the first two rounds, becoming the youngest French player to enter Round of 32 at French Open after Alize Cornet in 2008.

Zhang beat Burel 2-0 at Internationaux de Strasbourg last week, but that did not make Saturday's match easier. Having spent most of her time trailing during the first set, Zhang returned from 0-40 in the ninth game and achieved a service break in the following one, making it 5-5.

The two exchanged breaks in the following two games, dragging the first set into a tiebreak. This time, Zhang did not leave much chance for Burel and took it 7-2, winning the first set 7-6.

Zhang began to take an advantageous position in the second set as she led 3-1 after four games. However, Burel showed her resilience by almost copying Zhang's performance in the first set. The score reached 3-3 after six games and then went to 4-4 and 5-5.

Zhang finally achieved another break in the 11th game and followed up to take another love game in the following one, defeating Burel again to set a new record of her trip at Roland-Garros. She also became the first Chinese player to go so far at the French Open after Li Na in 2012.

Zhang will meet the winner between Petra Kvitova (No. 7 Seed) and Leylah Fernandez.
