Hong Kong reports 8 new COVID-19 cases

China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) reported eight new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, according to its Centre for Health Protection.

Five of the new cases are domestic transmissions, the authorities said, while the other three are from overseas.

The city has so far reported a total of 5,132 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 105 deaths.

HKSAR government extends social distancing restrictions

The HKSAR government on Tuesday extended social distancing restrictions for another week until October 15, while expressing concerns about the probable worsening of local COVID-19 infections.

The curbs include public gatherings limited to four people or less and mandatory mask-wearing in public transport and places. Team ice-skating involving more than four people will be allowed starting from October 9.

The Secretary for Food and Health, Sophia Chan, said the recent spike in cases could lead to another wave of the epidemic sooner than expected if anti-virus measures were not observed strictly.

HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Tuesday also urged the public to remain vigilant and said the HKSAR government will continue to be prepared.

Lam mentioned that the government is studying to exempt some HKSAR residents on the mainland from the 14-day compulsory quarantine after returning to the city to facilitate work, medical visits, family visits and other activities.
