Petro China's Tarim Oil Field Company was the first oil company to explore the shifting sands of the Taklamakan Desert in the southwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. After the discovery of oil and water, the company played a vital role in the region's energy projects. More than 300 people are now working and living in what is now largely a manmade oasis. The fields are equipped with facilities like a gym, stadium and karaoke house to help workers overcome the desolation. It also benefits the locals, providing natural gas and electricity to the area.
