Germany locks down famous scenic Alpine region
Germany has ordered lockdown for the Bavarian municipality of Berchtesgadener Land from 2 p.m. on Tuesday as the scenic Alpine region has become the main coronavirus hotspot in the country.
Schools and kindergartens will remain closed, while restaurants and other hospitality businesses will all halt operation till at least November 2.
An average of 272.8 COVID-19 infections per 100,000 residents living in Berchtesgadener Land have been detected over the past week, the highest number of new cases in Germany. Some 57 new cases were detected on Monday alone.
Berchtesgadener Land is well-known among tourists for its picturesque countryside, the Watzmann, one of Germany's highest mountains and Lake Konigsee.
