Eleven people were killed and 13 others injured in a stampede in Jalalabad city, the capital of eastern Afghanistan Nangarhar province, on Wednesday, said a statement of the provincial government.

Thousands of people gathered in a football stadium close to Pakistan's consulate Wednesday morning to obtain visa, the statement said.

The situation went out of control and as a result, 11 people including women and children were killed and 13 others including 10 women and three men sustained injuries.

Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the Pakistani consulate had stopped issuing visa and resumed the service one week ago, the statement said.

After the resuming of the visa issuance, thousands of Afghans from the eastern provinces applied for visa to go to Pakistan to visit relatives or seek medical treatment.
