In Brazil, Sao Paulo state highway police discovered 166 parrots being illegally smuggled in the trunk of a car on October 18. The birds, many of them babies, were immediately handed over to the Mata Ciliar animal rescue NGO to be cared for. Two men in the car were arrested and told the police they had captured the parrots in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul with the intention of selling them in Sao Paulo.
